The ultimate privacy policy is not collecting data at all. Edge AI makes this possible by executing intelligence directly on the user's device.

Local Inferencing

Traditional IoT devices act as dumb terminals: they record video or audio and stream it to the cloud for processing. This creates massive privacy vulnerabilities. With Edge AI via frameworks like TensorFlow Lite, the neural network lives on the microcontroller. It can detect a "wake word" or "person" locally, completely eliminating the need to transmit sensitive sensor data.

Federated Learning (FL)

If we don't upload user data, how do we train better models? Federated Learning is the answer. Instead of bringing data to the model, we bring the model to the data. Edge devices download a baseline model, train it locally using the user's private data, and then upload only the computed mathematical weight adjustments to a central aggregator.

Differential Privacy (DP)

Even transmitting weight adjustments isn't 100% foolproof; sophisticated attackers could potentially reverse-engineer the weights to deduce if specific data was present. Differential Privacy solves this by deliberately injecting mathematical noise (determined by the variable epsilon) into the weights before transmission, obfuscating individual contributions while maintaining global accuracy.

Knowledge Base FAQ

Why is Edge AI better for privacy than Cloud AI?

Edge AI processes data locally on the device (like a smartphone or IoT sensor). This means sensitive raw data—such as voice recordings or camera feeds—never leaves the device, eliminating the risks of interception during transit or data breaches on centralized cloud servers.

What is Federated Learning in Edge AI?

Federated Learning is a decentralized machine learning approach. Instead of sending raw user data to a central cloud to train a model, the device downloads a global model, trains it locally with the user's private data, and only sends back the updated "weights" (mathematical adjustments) to improve the global model.

How does differential privacy work on microcontrollers?

Differential privacy works by injecting controlled mathematical noise into the model's weight updates before they leave the microcontroller. This ensures that when the server aggregates the updates, it learns the general patterns of the population, but it is mathematically impossible to identify or extract any single user's specific data.

Privacy Databank

Federated Learning
A machine learning technique that trains an algorithm across multiple decentralized edge devices holding local data samples, without exchanging them.
concept.py
Differential Privacy
A system for publicly sharing information about a dataset by describing the patterns of groups while withholding information about individuals.
concept.py
Local Processing
Executing computational tasks (like AI inference) directly on the edge hardware (e.g., Arduino, ESP32) rather than relying on a cloud server.
concept.py
Homomorphic Encryption
A form of encryption allowing computation on ciphertexts, generating an encrypted result which matches the result of operations performed on plaintext.
concept.py
Epsilon (ε)
The parameter in Differential Privacy that determines the privacy loss budget. A lower epsilon means more noise and higher privacy.

TEE
Trusted Execution Environment. A secure area of a main processor ensuring sensitive data is stored, processed, and protected in an isolated environment.
