Foundation of Generative AI
"We are moving from systems that can 'understand' and 'label' the world, to systems that can 'create' and 'imagine' new parts of it."
The Paradigm Shift
Historically, Machine Learning was highly discriminative. You trained a model on thousands of pictures of cats and dogs, and its job was simply to output a label: Cat (95% confidence). It learned the boundary between classes.
Generative AI fundamentally alters this. Instead of classifying, these models learn the underlying distribution of the data itself. When asked, they can sample from this distribution to generate completely novel data that didn't exist in the training set.
How LLMs Work (Autoregression)
Large Language Models (like GPT-4, LLaMA, or Claude) are primarily Autoregressive text generators.
- Tokens: Text is broken down into chunks called tokens.
- Prediction: The model looks at the sequence of tokens you provided (the Prompt) and calculates a massive probability distribution for what the next single token should be.
- Iteration: It appends that predicted token to the sequence, and runs the process again. Word by word, it builds an essay, code, or poem.
❓ Core AI Concepts FAQ
What exactly is a "Prompt"?
A Prompt is the natural language input provided by a human user to a Generative AI model. It acts as the initial context or instruction that guides the model's output. Prompt Engineering is the skill of optimizing these inputs to get more accurate, relevant, or creative responses.
What are Hallucinations in AI?
Because LLMs predict the most statistically likely next word, they don't reference a database of facts. Sometimes, the most statistically likely word sequence forms a statement that is completely factually incorrect. This phenomenon of confidently generating false information is called a Hallucination.
What is a Diffusion Model?
While LLMs handle text, Diffusion Models (like Midjourney or Stable Diffusion) handle image generation. They work by taking an image consisting of pure visual noise, and iteratively "denoising" it step-by-step, guided by a text prompt, until a clear image emerges.
