Sending strings to an API is easy. Building context-aware, reasoning applications that interact with external data is hard. LangChain is the framework that abstracts the complexity of LLM engineering.

The Core: Prompts & Models

At the heart of any generative application is the model (like GPT-4 or Llama-3). However, hardcoding instructions into a single string doesn't scale. PromptTemplates allow developers to define reusable schemas with dynamic variables.

LCEL: LangChain Expression Language

Modern LangChain development relies on LCEL. It provides a declarative way to easily compose chains. Using the .pipe() operator, you pass the output of a prompt directly into a model, and then into an output parser.

This standardization enables out-of-the-box support for streaming, asynchronous execution, and parallel processing.
