Thinking Like a Camera: The Key to Realistic AI

When you type "a photo of a person" into Midjourney or Stable Diffusion, the model defaults to a generic average. To achieve specific styles—cinematic, vintage, macro, or wide-angle—you must explicitly describe the camera gear and settings.
1. Focal Length: Setting the Scene
The millimeter (mm) of the lens dictates how much of the world is seen and how compressed the background appears.
Wide Angle (16mm - 35mm)
Expands the background. Great for landscapes or making a subject feel small in a large environment. Can distort faces close up.
Telephoto (85mm - 200mm)
Compresses the background. Flattering for portraits. Makes the background appear closer and blurrier.
2. Aperture: The Art of Blur
Aperture is measured in f-stops (e.g., f/1.8, f/8). A lower number means a wider opening, letting in more light and creating a shallow depth of field (blurry background/bokeh).
Pro Tip: Using "shot on f/1.2" in your prompt is the fastest way to get that expensive "portrait mode" look in AI generations.
