Introduction to Visual Prompting

In the realm of AI design, 'style' is not just an adjective; it is a complex coordinate system. Models like Midjourney, DALL-E 3, and Stable Diffusion don't 'see' art like humans do; they interpret noise patterns based on semantic tokens. To get exactly what you want, you must move beyond 'make it look cool' to specifying the Medium, the Subject, the Composition, and the Modifier. This module decodes the language of visual AI.

Concept 1: Prompt Anatomy

A successful prompt is built hierarchically. The Subject comes first, followed by Medium, Style, and finally, technical Parameters. Mixing up this order can confuse the model regarding what is most important.

Mastering Visual Prompting: Beyond "Make it Pop"

The difference between a mediocre AI generation and a masterpiece lies in the specificity of the prompt. While modern models like Midjourney v6 and DALL-E 3 are incredibly capable of interpreting vague intent, they truly shine when directed with technical precision. This guide breaks down the essential vocabulary of visual design that every AI marketer must know.

The Medium is the Message

The first modifier you must control is the medium. If you leave this blank, the AI will guess based on the subject. A "portrait of a CEO" will likely be photographic. But specific mediums invoke specific aesthetics:

Photography: Requires camera vocabulary (Lens, ISO, Aperture).
3D Render: Requires software vocabulary (Unreal Engine 5, Octane Render, Ray Tracing).
Illustration: Requires physical media vocabulary (Watercolor, Charcoal, Vector, Oil on Canvas).

Lighting: The Emotional Modifier

Lighting dictates mood. "Cinematic lighting" is often too generic. Instead, try "Rim lighting" to separate a subject from the background, "Volumetric lighting" to add atmospheric haze, or "Chiaroscuro" for deep, dramatic shadows. In product photography, "Studio lighting" implies a controlled, neutral environment with soft shadows.

Composition and Camera Angles

Don't let the AI choose the angle. "Low angle shot" makes the subject look powerful. "High angle" makes them look vulnerable. "Isometric view" is excellent for technical diagrams or architectural layouts. "Macro shot" creates extreme close-ups with shallow depth of field.

Technical Parameters

Finally, master the parameters of your tool. In Midjourney, --ar controls aspect ratio, --stylize controls artistic freedom, and --weird introduces unconventional elements. Knowing when to use --no (negative prompting) to remove unwanted elements like "text" or "blur" is just as important as the positive prompt.

Visual Prompting Glossary

Bokeh
The aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image. Achieved with keywords like "f/1.8" or "shallow depth of field".
Octane Render
A keyword referencing a specific 3D rendering engine known for its photorealistic lighting and material handling. Great for product shots.
Volumetric Lighting
Also known as "God Rays". It renders light beams as if they are passing through dust or fog, adding atmosphere and depth.
Isometric
A method of representing 3D objects in 2D without perspective distortion. Ideal for maps, room layouts, and icons.
Negative Prompt
A list of keywords you want the AI to avoid generating (e.g., --no blur, text, watermark).
