Low ResPrint

Guide:Midjourney generates images at roughly 1 megapixel. This looks great on a phone, but if you try to print it on a large poster, it will look blurry and pixelated.

Step 1: Resolution vs Density

Resolution is the total pixel count. Density (DPI) is how tightly those pixels are packed when printed. A 1000px image can be 1 inch wide (high density) or 10 inches wide (very pixelated).

From Screen to Billboard: Mastering AI Resolution

Creating stunning AI imagery in Midjourney is only half the battle. The raw output is typically around 1024x1024 pixels—perfect for Instagram, but disastrous for a physical magazine cover or a billboard.

1. The 300 DPI Golden Rule

DPI (Dots Per Inch) is the measure of spatial printing dot density. Standard web screens are 72 PPI. Professional print is 300 DPI. To print an A4 image full page, you need approx 2480 x 3508 pixels. Midjourney gives you less than a third of that.

2. AI Upscaling vs. Stretching

Old school upscaling (Bicubic) just made pixels bigger and blurrier. AI Upscaling (like Magnific or Topaz) understands the content. It knows what skin texture looks like and "hallucinates" new pores and details that weren't in the original low-res file.

Pro Tip: Never upscale text generated by AI. It becomes garbled. Always overlay typography in Illustrator *after* upscaling the background.

Upscaling & Print Glossary

DPI (Dots Per Inch)
The number of individual ink dots a printer can produce within a linear inch. Higher DPI means sharper images.
