When using Generative AI, the canvas shape is as important as the subject. Midjourney's default 1:1 square is powerful, but true art direction requires understanding how to frame your subject for the intended medium.
1. The Cinematic Look (16:9, 21:9)
Widescreen ratios add "epicness" to a generation. They allow for negative space, establishing shots, and complex compositions that simply don't fit in a square.
2. The Social Mobile First (9:16, 4:5)
If you are generating content for social media, you must think vertically. 9:16 takes up the full phone screen, creating an immersive experience. 4:5 is optimized for the Instagram feed.
Pro Tip: Using--ar 16:9usually biases the model towards landscapes, while--ar 9:16biases it towards portraits of people or tall structures.
